University of Dundee CTIR

Location: University of Dundee, Dundee

The new build Centre for Translational & Interdisciplinary Research comprises of flexible research laboratories, associated office and meeting space over four storeys with a further two floors of plant rooms. The ground floor accommodates a brand new High Throughput Robotics & Molecular Pharmacology Space. The second floor accommodates ‘’Computational Biology’’, including Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Data Analysis and Software Development experts. The Mezzanine Level was fitted-out as a Mass Spectrometer Laboratory and Level 3 as a Chemistry Laboratory.

The building is linked to the existing College of Life Sciences complex by a new enclosed link. The space contains a Café and acts as a meeting place for collaboration & networking.

On the front façade of the building large anodised aluminium cladding panels incorporate an artistic abstraction representative of 4 key stages of Life Science Research: Molecular, Organellar, Cellular and Tissue. The scientific images have been translated into artwork & perforated onto panels, by Professor Elaine Shemilt and her team from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.

This was an extension to an existing highly sensitive, occupied and functioning University Research Building, adjacent to several other functioning buildings and main campus car parks, Minimal disruption in terms of noise, dust, and vibration was essential to allow the successful business continuity for the Life Sciences Research Centre to continue uninterrupted.  Traffic Management and control of car parking were also key to our successful integration into the University Campus.
